If you decide to visit the island during the celebration of Holy Week you will encounter a unique and unforgettable experience as throughout Greece it is considered the most important holiday of the year. The celebrations begin on the Monday a week prior to Easter with different events taking place in the home and churches. At midday on Good Friday crowds of worshippers take part in the procession of the Crucified Christ through the town and during the early hours of Holy Saturday morning a procession takes place (in accordance with the ancient customs), where the Bishop announces the Resurrection at the moment of sunrise.
On Easter Sunday it is a time for families and friends to gather outside their homes and roast a lamb on the open fires and enjoy a splendid feast after fasting for so many days.
